For this project, I created an illustration for BIG Issue to accompany an essay by Adam S. Leslie. The text explores how his novel Lost in the Garden was shaped by his early imagination of films—his personal “ghosts of the films” before he had actually seen them.
I initially explored different ideas, like a view of the night sky with silent spaceships passing overhead or a film roll in a garden releasing a ghostly glow. The final illustration focuses on a key moment from the essay: a scene from Eraserheadby David Lynch. Leslie first read about this scene years before seeing it and had imagined it completely differently. The artwork reflects this theme of memory, expectation, and the way stories take shape in our minds.
A really exciting project to work on!
