In my bachelor thesis, I crafted a series comprising 12 landscape illustrations. Drawing inspiration from the stylistic elements of traditional Japanese print art, I sought to present Hamburg’s Wilhelmsburg area from the perspective of a pedestrian, shedding new light upon it.
I approached my walks through Wilhelmsburg with the unbiased gaze of a flâneur, discovering the aesthetic potential and unique aspects of this district. Geographically connected to Hamburg yet distinctly different, it appears as a preserved piece of history, living at a different pace than the city. The Elbe Island is a place where nature parks, meadows, canals, dilapidated houses, and industry blend with vibrant urban romanticism. This juxtaposition of contrasts creates captivating harmonies. Combining the northern German landscapes of Wilhelmsburg with Hokusai’s depictions of Japanese landscapes became a rewarding goal. Drawing from these boundless sources, I aimed to create something entirely new.
