This book cover illustration was created for Watership Down by Richard Adams, an adventure novel about a group of wild rabbits on a perilous journey through the Downs of southern England in search of a new home. It is a beautifully written story that completely immerses you in the world of the rabbits, making it a particularly memorable reading experience.

For the cover, I wanted to capture that feeling of being surrounded by the landscape and to give a sense of the long journey still ahead of them. I took inspiration from a moment in the book when the rabbits get a glimpse of how far they still have to travel. Rather than illustrating a specific action scene, I wanted the image to focus on the scale of their journey and the change of perspective within the landscape.

It was a real pleasure to listen to the audiobook while working on this illustration. Being able to spend so much time inside the world of a book while developing an image for it is one of the things I enjoy most about creating book covers. This project felt particularly close to the way I have always imagined my job as an illustrator.
